When USC first opened its doors to 53 students and 10 teachers in 1880, the city still lacked paved streets, electric lights, telephones and a reliable fire alarm system. Today, USC is home to more than 48,000 students and over 4,400 full-time faculty, and is located in the heart of one of the biggest metropolises in the world.

Built in 1880, Widney Alumni House is the oldest building on the USC campus and in Southern California.Â

The University of Southern California (USC) was founded in 1880, making it the oldest private research university in California. Established through the land donations of key Los Angeles figures Ozro W. Childs, John G. Downey, and Isaias W. Hellman, it opened its doors with 53 students and 10 faculty members. Originally affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, USC later ended formal ties with the denomination and broadened its academic offerings. Over the years, the institution has grown into a global research powerhouse, known for its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary studies, innovation, and an extensive network of notable alumni.

The Era of the Founders<br>
Los Angeles was a rough-and-tumble frontier town in the early 1870s, when a group of public-spirited citizens led by Judge Robert Maclay Widney first dreamed of establishing a university in the region. It took nearly a decade for this vision to become a reality, but in 1879 Widney formed a board of trustees and secured a donation of 308 lots of land from three prominent members of the community — Ozro W. Childs, a Protestant horticulturist; former California Governor John G. Downey, an Irish-Catholic pharmacist and businessman; and Isaias W. Hellman, a German-Jewish banker and philanthropist. The gift provided land for a campus as well as a source of endowment, the seeds of financial support for the nascent institution.

USC students and athletes are known as Trojans, epitomized by the Trojan Shrine, nicknamed "Tommy Trojan", near the center of campus. Until 1912, USC students (especially athletes) were known as Fighting Methodists or Wesleyans, though neither name was approved by the university. Tommy’s sword has been stolen so frequently that instead of replacing it with an expensive brass one each time, he is now provided with a wooden one

The University of Southern California holds the record for the most Olympic medals won by any U.S. institution, having earned 326 medals prior to the 2024 Olympic Games.
